Cades Cove
Cades Cove, nestled in the heart of the Smoky Mountains, is not only a historical gem but also a prime spot for bear sightings. The expansive meadows and surrounding woodlands provide an abundant source of food for the bears, making it a favorite grazing ground. As you drive along the scenic loop road, keep your eyes peeled for bears meandering through the fields or exploring the edges of the dense forests. From personal experience Cades Cove is where I have seen the most bears. However with bear sightings in this area that also causes extreme traffic backup so be prepared.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail offers more than just picturesque landscapes and cascading waterfalls. This scenic route is known to provide ample opportunities for bear encounters. The dense vegetation along the trail provides an ideal habitat for bears, and the frequent sightings by visitors testify to their presence. Be sure to drive slowly and keep your eyes focused on the forested areas. If luck is on your side, you may catch sight of a bear foraging for food or playfully exploring its surroundings. This is another one way road that can and does get backed up with traffic easily.
Cataloochee Valley
Cataloochee Valley, located in the northeastern part of the park, is not only a historical treasure but also a haven for wildlife, including black bears. The vast open meadows and lush forests create an idyllic setting for bear sightings. Take a leisurely stroll along the fields and keep an eye out for bears grazing on vegetation or perhaps even catching a fish in one of the clear streams. Remember, it’s important to maintain a respectful distance and observe these creatures without disturbing their natural behaviors.
Newfound Gap Road
As one of the most popular scenic drives in the Smoky Mountains, Newfound Gap Road offers more than just breathtaking vistas. The diverse ecosystems along this route provide ample opportunities for spotting bears. Be sure to drive slowly and scan the forested areas as you make your way through this picturesque mountain pass. Bears are often seen foraging for berries or exploring the surrounding woodlands.

This moderately easy 2.6-mile paved trail takes you through a beautiful forest and rewards you with the sight of a majestic waterfall.
