While backpacking, there is nothing better than setting up camp, sitting beside the fire with a full belly, and sipping on some whiskey/bourbon. Depending on if you are watching your pack weight or just want a convenient way to carry your alcohol around there are some flask options out there.
Standard Stanley Flask
If you are looking for just your standard ordinary screw top stainless steel flask, the Stanley Master Flask might be for you. I own some Stanley products and they are built to last. The Stanley Master can hold up to 8oz of liquid and weighs in at 9 ounces.
Nalgene Flask
If you want something a little lighter and able to carry more ounces, then check out the Nalgene Flask. Nalgene is a great brand for water bottles. So it’s no surprise they have a flask option. The Nalgene is 4.3 ounces and can hold 12 ounces of liquid. This flask comes with an outer sleeve and the cap twists off into a handy shot glass.
GSI Flask
One the lightest and most durable flasks I have found is the GSI flask. The GSI is shatter resistant and has silicone siding for great grip. It also has the typical screw top cap. This flask can hold up to 10 ounces and weighs just 4.1 ounces.
Budget Option
Personally, this is what I do. I will go to the local liquor or grocery store. I will find a pint or half pint (depending on length of trip) of whatever alcohol I am in the mood for that is already in a plastic bottle. Once the alcohol is gone you can clean it out and reuse that bottle again and now you have a free lightweight plastic flask.
While backpacking you burn more calories and will be more dehydrated than you think. Alcohol alone will dehydrate you even more so have a good amount of water on hand. You will not be able to drink the same amount as you do at home. The last thing you want to happen is to vomit and further dehydrate yourself. If you decide to take alcohol on your next backpacking trip please drink responsibly.
