Firestarter

Budget: DIY Fire Starter for ONLY $4

Posted on May 31, 2019May 31, 2019 by Mark Berry

Starting a fire can be a pain. Buying gear to help with starting a fire (Example: Wet Fire Firestarter) can get expensive. You can get these items at any store or online.

ITEMS NEEDED
Cotton Balls
Petroleum Jelly
Altoids cannister

You can kneed the jelly onto the cotton balls with your hands or with a kitchen utensil.

What I like to do is over light heat melt the jelly in a pan and soak the cotton balls into the jelly. Sit the cotton balls to the side for 5-10 minutes because they will be hot.

place a bowl or plate wrapped in foil for the cotton balls to cool
avoid using a paper towel, it will absorb the jelly
Once cooled place the jelly soaked cotton balls into the altoid canister.
For added protection put the canister into a ziplock baggie.

All finished! Now you don’t have to stress about getting a fire started on your next backpacking trip.
