Hiking Angels Landing in Zion National Park, Utah is one of the most popular hikes in the world, so it’s not surprising that you’ve been recommended to check it out at least once during your lifetime. What is surprising, however, is just how difficult and dangerous the hike actually is, especially if you haven’t trained before attempting to hike it.
I was fortunate enough to hike Angels Landing before the new permit system started, and during the permit system. I can honestly say the permits although can be a hassle, have helped drastically to reduce the amount of people on the trail. It felt less dangerous due to less people, and you are able to relax and move at a comfortable pace that works for you.
Obtaining a Permit
To apply for a permit you will need to visit https://www.recreation.gov/permits/4675324 . The Recreation website will also provide all the information to plan your hike from times, fees and important need to knows.
There are multiple areas where Park Rangers are checking permits. If able print out your permits and have your ID available for quick access.
Plan Your Trip
If you are like most you will be coming from out of town and need a place to stay before or after your hike. If you are able to secure a room in Springdale, Utah. This is an awesome little town just outside of Zion National Park. You can walk to the park from this area and easily access the shuttle service. Springdale has great local resturants and art galleries that are a must visit.
For a cheaper route for hotels and extra lodging if Springdale is fully booked is Hurricane, Utah. Hurricane is about a 30 minute scenic drive to the park. This is a great town with many grocery stores, restaurants, and hotels.

Hiking Angels Landing
What is not talked about enough is the first half of this hike before the chained section at Scout’s Landing. This is a vigorus hike on a paved type trail. It feels like you are walking straight up at times. If your cardio is not the best you will need to take frequent breaks during this section. Especially the switchback section right before getting to Scout’s Landing. Bring plenty of water as there are no water sources on the trail.
Once you reach Scout’s Landing there are restrooms and plenty of areas to stop to take a water and snack break. It’s highly recommended to take break especially if this is your first time. This is a great stop before heading towards the chained section to the top.
The chained section is the most dangerous section of the Angels Landing hike. It can be slippery with loose gravel and sand from the rock. Depending on the time of year, bringing gloves will help grip and protect your hands while grabbing the chains to hold and pull yourself up the rocky trail. Also it will help when the chains swing into the rock and pinch your hand in the process.
For your first time on this section its wise to take it slow and really watch your footing. There are also no good places to stop for a true break. Only small areas for a simple water break and to catch your breath. This is why taking time at Scouts Landing is recommended.
Upon reaching the top there is typically some conjestion of people hanging out and enjoying the view and their accomplishment.
The hike down the chained section should be taken with the same caution as coming up. Coming down tends to be a little trickier at times. Again watch your footing and take your time decending the trail.
Post Hike Meal
Once you are finished with excitement and that feeling of accomplishment you are most likely going to be hungry. Take the shuttle service over to the lodge. They have a resturant next to the gift shop with outdoor seating. The food is reasonably priced and quite good. Also did I mention unlimited fountain drinks.
