Portable Wood Stove VS Portable Fuel Stove

Posted on December 21, 2018January 4, 2019 by Mark Berry

There are so many types of gear out there for your hikes. Choosing the correct gear is a different can of worms. Below are the good and bad between these two different type of hiking stoves.

Wood Burning Stove
PROSCONS
Endless FuelRain can limit use
LightweightThin Metal can bend
CheaperMany are bulky
Fuel Powered Stove
PROSCONS
Works in RainLimited Fuel
Easy CleanupBulky
Fast and EfficientHeavier

We can make these lists even long and longer from price and so on. Honestly you have each stove for certain situations. If you are going on multi-day hike that could call for rain. Im not going to chance packing up the wood burning stove. My fear is all the wood is wet and I cant get a fire going to eat because of rain

What scares me about the fuel powered stoves is that if the fuel runs dry. Well now you have no stove at all to use unless you have to start a small ground fire and use sticks to cook.

Im torn between the two because of the different situations. If its in your budget and you have the space and don’t mind the extra weight id say pack both fuel systems. If not just go with the best one for your situation and plan ahead.
