The Best Sunset and Sunrise Locations in the Smoky Mountains

Posted on March 8, 2023March 1, 2023 by Mark Berry

The Smoky Mountains offer numerous locations to view the sunset from stunning vantage points. Most are easily accessible by car. Some are even panoramic views for sunrise or sunset. Here are five of the best locations to view the sunset in the Smoky Mountains.

Clingmans Dome:

At an elevation of 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Smoky Mountains and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The observation tower at the top provides an unobstructed view of the sunset or sunrise.

Pro Tip: Clingmans Dome Road is only open from April 1 – November 30, 2023, weather permitting.

Newfound Gap:

Located on the Tennessee and North Carolina border, Newfound Gap offers breathtaking views of the sunset from an elevation of 5,046 feet. There is a large parking area and an observation deck that provides a clear view of the sunset.

Morton Overlook:

This overlook not far from Newfound Gap offers stunning views of the sunset and the surrounding mountains. It’s a less crowded spot than some of the other popular overlooks in the park.

Cades Cove:

This is one of the most popular spots in the park to view the sunset. The open fields provide unobstructed views of the sky and the surrounding mountains. It can be busy, but the views are worth it.

Mt. Leconte:

If you are up for a strenuous hike to the third-highest peak in the Smokies that offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys then Mt. Leconte is a great place to view the sunrise or sunset. There are several trails that lead to the summit of Mount LeConte, including the Alum Cave Trail, which is one of the most popular routes as well as the steepest to the summit. You can view the sunset or sunrise from two points which are Myrtle Point and Cliff Tops.

The LeConte Lodge, which is located on the summit of Mount LeConte, also offers some of the best views of the sunset in the park. Additionally, reservations for the LeConte Lodge often need to be made well in advance, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead if you’re interested in watching the sunset from the lodge.

Keep in mind that weather and time of year can affect the quality of the sunset views, so it’s a good idea to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.
