The Best Sunset Locations in Death Valley National Park

Posted on November 16, 2022February 1, 2024 by Mark Berry

Death Valley National Park is home to some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world, sun casting its rays across the most stunning landmarks you’ll ever see. Here are some of the park’s best locations to catch a sunset.

Zabriskie Point

Sunset at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley

Zabriskie Point is the classic spot for watching the sun set over Death Valley, and one of the best places to watch the sunset within Death Valley National Park. The hike is easy with a paved way to the overview. You can choose to hike into the canyon and connect to other trails. Please view your maps before heading into the canyons. There are plenty of benches on which to sit as the incline is pretty steep. Again, this is a classic and very popular location so it can and does get busy.

Side Note: This is also an excellent area to catch the sunrise. Again it does get busy so plan accordingly.

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

Mesquite Flat is the perfect spot for catching spectacular sunsets, and is one of the best places to view sunsets in Death Valley National Park. The Flats are also home to some of Death Valley’s most colorful sand dunes. Which makes this area is perfect to view a sunset. Another plus is it doesn’t get a much traffic as Zabriskie Point. Be sure not to miss out on this incredible natural wonder!

Badwater Basin

One of Death Valley’s most popular attractions is Badwater Basin – a place where you can see one of the lowest points on Earth! 262 feet below sea level to be exact. Badwater Basin was created when rainwater flowed through clay minerals (exposed at this location) eroding it into a basin shape. You’ll want to visit this site at sunset because it has panoramic views of the valley floor below. Make sure to hike the 2 miles out to the pure white salt flats. From there you’ll get the full experience of an excellent sunset.

Dante’s View

Dante’s View, the highest point in the park. At 4,200 feet above sea level and with more than two miles of visibility, one being the Badwater Basin Salt Flats just below. this is one of the best places to catch a sunset.

At the end of the day which ever location you decide you will not be disappointed. All of these locations offer different scenery and vantage points for a perfect sunset.
