Understand The New Parking Permits in The Smoky Mountains

Posted on June 15, 2023June 14, 2023 by Mark Berry

The Smoky Mountains is the most visited national park in the US and is also FREE to enter without any national park pass. So, honestly I believe this parking permit system is long over due. To preserve and manage the park effectively, the authorities have implemented a new parking permit system. There have been times where you couldn’t drive through Roaring Fork because of so many cars parked on the side of the road, blocking a majority of the road.

Roaring Fork Pre-Permit in Smoky Mountains
  1. Understand the Purpose: The primary goal of the new parking permit system is to regulate and limit the number of vehicles within the park. By controlling parking, it helps reduce congestion, protects the environment, and ensures a more enjoyable experience for all visitors.
  2. Types of Permits: The new parking permit system offers two types of permits: reservation-based permits and daily permits.
  • Reservation-Based Permits: These permits allow you to reserve a specific parking spot for a designated time in advance. They are ideal for planning ahead and securing parking during peak seasons or busy weekends.
  • Current Prices are $5 a day, $15 a week, or $40 annually starting from the day of purchase.
  • Permits Must Include Your License Plate Number So Have That Available

  • Daily Permits: If you prefer a more spontaneous visit, daily permits are available for purchase for $5 a day on the day of your visit. These permits grant you access to available parking spots on a first-come, first-served basis.
  1. Online Registration: To obtain a parking permit, you must register online through the official Smoky Mountains website. Create an account and provide the required information, including your name, contact details, and vehicle information. This process ensures a seamless experience when reserving or purchasing permits.
  2. Plan Ahead: Due to the high demand for parking permits, especially during peak seasons, it’s advisable to plan your trip well in advance. Check the availability of permits and reserve your spot as early as possible to secure your parking.
  3. Be Aware of Time Restrictions: Parking permits have specific time restrictions. Make sure you understand the duration of your permit and plan your activities accordingly. If you exceed the permitted time, you may be subject to fines or penalties.
  4. Cancellations and Refunds: Life happens, and sometimes plans change. If you need to cancel your reservation or request a refund for a parking permit, familiarize yourself with the cancellation policy. Understanding the terms and conditions beforehand will help you navigate any unexpected situations.
  5. Carpooling and Alternative Transportation: To further alleviate parking congestion, consider carpooling with friends or family members. Sharing a vehicle reduces the number of permits required and contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly experience. Additionally, explore alternative transportation options such as shuttles or public transportation, which may be available in the park.
  6. Stay Informed: Stay updated with the latest information regarding the parking permit system at the Smoky Mountains. Check the official park website here: https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/fees.htm#11/35.5959/-83.4988

The new parking permit system at the Smoky Mountains aims to improve the visitor experience and protect the natural beauty of the park. By understanding the purpose, types of permits, and following these essential tips, you’ll be well-prepared to navigate the parking permit system seamlessly. Plan ahead, stay informed, and make the most of your visit to the most visited national park. Happy Hiking!
