Trash at a campsite

What is Leave No Trace and Why it’s Important

Posted on May 5, 2023May 1, 2023 by Mark Berry

The Leave No Trace outdoor ethics and guiding principles aim to reduce the negative effects of human activity on the environment. A non-profit organization called Leave No Trace for Outdoor Ethics offers advice and instruction on these values, which are as follows:

  1. Plan ahead and prepare
  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  3. Dispose of waste properly
  4. Leave what you find
  5. Minimize campfire impact
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of other visitors

Leave No Trace is important because it helps to protect the environment and preserve natural spaces for future generations. When people engage in outdoor activities without following these principles, they can cause damage to the ecosystem, disturb wildlife, and leave behind garbage and other waste that can be harmful to the environment.

By following Leave No Trace principles, we can minimize our impact and ensure that the natural environment remains healthy and sustainable for years to come. Additionally, Leave No Trace helps to ensure that all visitors to natural areas have a positive experience by reducing conflicts and promoting a sense of stewardship for the environment.

Another great company is Keep Nature Wild. They help get people out there to pick up trash and keep nature clean and wild. Apply to be a Wild Keeper: https://keepnaturewild.com/pages/wild-keepers

At the end of the day we need to do better at not littering and packing our trash out on hikes and at our campsites. If everyone does their part the sky’s the limit.
