Quality and budget do not mix in my experience. Many affordable budget options sacrifice comfort, durability, or portability. In the world of backpacking portability is the main factor for me at least. I want gear that is compact and lightweight, yet can get the job done. However, the Ozark Trail 50F Compact Mummy Sleeping Bag offers an impressive balance of lightweight performance, comfort, and affordability for less than $25. (Price can vary by state)
After personally testing this sleeping bag, I was pleasantly surprised by its roomy interior, lightweight design, and temperature rating made me feel more comfortable taking it out on a trip. I generally don’t like mummy bags due to feeling claustrophobic, but I had plenty of room to move in my shoulder area.

Lightweight and Backpacker Friendly
One of the biggest advantages of this sleeping bag is its portability. For me when backpacking every ounce matters. Weighing under two pounds, the sleeping bag is easy to carry without adding unnecessary weight to your pack.
Real World Experience:
I took this sleeping bag on a multi-day, 110+ mile backpacking trip while attempting the Indiana Triple Crown. I completed the trip in the middle of spring, when temperatures did not drop below 40°F. I experienced several rainy nights and fluctuating temperatures throughout the trip. Despite the damp weather conditions, the sleeping bag kept me comfortable all night. The mummy-style design helped retain body heat effectively, and the insulated hood provided additional warmth when temperatures dropped overnight. I should also note that I paired it with an Kammok Firebelly Underquilt, as I hammock camp while backpacking.
After several nights on the trail, I came away convinced that this bag is one of the best budget-friendly backpacking sleeping bags for the price available for spring, summer and maybe early fall.
At the end of the day this is a great budget and beginner bag for someone wanting to get into backpacking. I wouldn’t push this bag below the recommended temperature rating. However, i would recommend that this is a great late spring and summer bag.
